Travel to Serifos

Located in Greece, Serifos is a great holiday destination. Catch a flight to Athens and then take a ferry to the island – it’s the only way to reach it. Here you will learn how you can reach and discover this beautiful island.

Flights Near Serifos

There is no airport on the island. The closest airport is Athens International Airport. From the mainland, you can embark on a ferry to reach Serifos.

Ferries to Serifos (Ferry Athens to Serifos)

You can easily access Serifos, Greece by ferry, from both the mainland, Athens, and from some of the other Greek islands. The journey from Piraeus port on the Athens to Serifos ferry lasts around 2 hours.

As the island is relatively small, it’s easily explored. There are several ways to get around and explore this charming island.

Taxis

A taxi offers you easy and fast transportation from one location to another. It’s always a good idea to take a taxi when you are planning on enjoying some drinks.

Car and Motorbike Rentals

There are several vendors on the island that offer motorbike and car rentals services. It’s the perfect way to explore the island at your own pace and visit some more of the secluded spots.

Public Buses in Summer

Summer is a popular time to visit the island. During this season, there are public buses that frequently drive to popular spots on Serifos. Tickets are sold inside the buses and you can usually find the timetables posted at the bus stops.

Things to do in Serifos Greece

Compared to the other Cyclades islands, the island is not as developed in their tourism offerings. But, that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of fun activities to do and places to see while you discover Serifos. Here are a few of the top things to do in Serifos!

Piazza Square

The square is located in Chora, the capital town of the island. The town is situated on the side of a mountain and overlooks the harbour beneath.

This charming square features tables offering food and drinks from local ouzeries and a taverna. An ouzerie is an establishment that serves small dishes (mezes) with the local’s favorite spirit, ouzo.

Church of Agios Konstantinos

Located at a height of 251 metres, this charming chapel is perched on the highest spot of Chora on top of Kastro. The chapel, which was renovated in 1928, is small in size but that doesn’t take away from its character.

Be sure to have your camera with you as the location offers stunning vantage points of the sea and the neighbouring islands.

Monastery of Taxiarches

Located on the northern side of Serifos island is the Monastery of Agioi Taxiarches. It’s a male monastery that was built in 1572. The monastery is dedicated to the patron saints of the island, the Archangels Michael and Gabriel.

It’s home to beautiful murals painted by Emmanuel Skordilis. It hosts several religious heirlooms including numerous manuscripts, like the Sacred Codes of 1754.

Serifos Archaeological Museum

Founded in 1976, the museum is located in the Town Hall building. It boasts interesting exhibits that show local pieces excavated in Serifos from the Hellenistic and Roman time period. 

Discover marble statues, vessels, armory pieces, inscriptions, and other artefacts representing the history of this Cycladic island.

Serifos Grias Castle

Situated above Koutalas, this castle sits on a hill overlooking the Aegean Sea. The Castle of Grias translates to the Castle of the Old Woman. Though the castle is in ruins, you can still find traces of the defence wall and some structural remains from an early Christian basilica.

It’s no surprise that since there are tons of incredible Greek islands to visit, there is an abundance of choice when it comes to choosing the right beach.

The beaches in Serifos are the ideal place to relax and enjoy some sunshine. Most of the beaches are secluded and offer a lot of privacy. As such, there are a limited amount of beaches that offer facilities.

Psili Ammos Beach

Located on the east coast, this is one of the island’s more popular beaches. Due to its location and stunning views, there are a couple of restaurants available on the beach. It’s also often chosen as an anchor point for yachts and sailboats visiting the island.

Livadakia Beach

Livadakia is one of the most popular sandy beaches thanks to its crystal water. It offers various bars and taverns. This makes it an ideal place to enjoy a cold drink or a delicious meal.

Livadakia beach even offers some water-sport facilities and has a campsite. The local tamarisk trees are perfect to lay under. They provide you with shade and keep you protected from the winds.

Livadi Beach

This sandy, pebbly beach is surrounded by lush green trees that are great for shade. Due to its close proximity to Livadi town, there are several facilities available for your use.

This beach is also home to Serifos Scuba Divers. What better way to enjoy your vacation than by diving into the crystal blue water and making friends with the local sea life.

Megalo Livadi Beach

Located in a deep bay, this beach features shallow waters and tamarisk trees.  It has sufficient shade in the hot summer months, making it a fantastic choice for families.

There are also several water-sport activities available, like windsurfing, paddle-boarding, water-skiing, and of course, swimming.

Koutalas Beach

If you are looking for shelter from the seasonal breezes (called meltemia) and some protection from the sun, Koutalas beach is the one for you.

It’s a very peaceful location with shiny pebbles and some sand. Amid its few facilities, there are some small taverns serving drinks or lunch.

Sykamia Beach

Sykamia is one of the most secluded beaches of Serifos. If you are looking to get away from the crowds and enjoy some relaxation time in the sun, Sykamia will deliver.

Even though it’s secluded, there is a cafe offering drinks and food.

Serifos Hotels & Accommodation

Serifos Olive

The island has managed to keep its traditional Greek character. Serifos accommodations mostly consist of studios and family apartments. These are built using charming Cycladic architecture.

 Most hotels are concentrated around the port and in the small towns of Livadi and Livadakia.

  • Serifos Olive: Located in Chora, this newly-renovated island house boasts a big living room with a kitchen and a big bedroom with a bathroom. It has a balcony, a patio and a large rooftop with amazing views of the Aegean sea.
  • Amfitriti: This property is only situated 300 metres from Livadi beach and 500 metres from restaurants and cafes. Each air-conditioned studio and balcony features free Wi-Fi and a TV. Bathrooms include a shower, hairdryer, and free toiletries.
  • Rizes Hotel: Located in Simpotama, this hotel offers port transfer, a sun terrace with magnificent views of the harbour, and a pool. It also features dining facilities and a spacious lounge with free Wi-Fi. The air-conditioned apartments come equipped with kitchen facilities and bathrooms with built-in showers.
