Journey Duration: No service

If you are searching online for a train connecting Nerja to Malaga then you likely won’t find anything in your search results. This is because currently there is no actual Malaga to Nerja train service that connects these two cities.

If travelling between these two destinations, and you would prefer to make use of public transport, then you would have to consider taking the Malaga to Nerja bus instead.

I’ll discuss this option down below in more detail.

Journey Duration: Ranges between 50 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes.

One of the ways that you may consider travelling between the two cities would be to take a bus service. The Malaga Nerja bus is operated by the coach company known as ALSA.

Starting from around 07:00 am in the morning, this bus service runs several departure times throughout the day and up until as late as 23:00 pm at night departing from Malaga.

Similarly, on the return, ALSA’s Nerja Malaga bus service starts departures out of Nerja from around 06:30 am in the morning, with the last bus leaving Nerja at around 21:45 pm.

Currently, a one-way ticket on this bus route costs €4.65. It is the same price regardless if you have booked the quicker or longer journey time.

Malaga Bus StationIf you’re catching the bus out of Malaga it’s very important to note which ALSA bus you booked as there are different departure points depending on which bus you selected.

Malaga’s main bus terminal is the Estación de Autobuses de Malaga. The closest metro being El Perchel and it is located right next to the Maria Zambrano train station. So, it’s fairly easy to get to.

The other bus departure point in Malaga is from the Port (Puerto Malaga). It is the Estacio Autobuses Malaga situated in Avenida Manuel Augustin Heredia and is only around 8 minutes walking distance (650 metres) from the Centro Alameda metro station.

Top Tip: When booking online through ALSA’s website, there is an option to view the itinerary and when clicking on the departure name it will show you a map with the actual location, which is quite handy.

Nerja Bus StationWhen arriving into or departing from Nerja you will find the Nerja bus station located in Avenida de Pescia. In fact, you can simply search for “ALSA Nerja” on Google maps, you’ll easily find the exact location this way.

If you are arriving into Malaga Costa Del Sol airport and planning a trip to Nerja directly from the airport, then you may consider the following options:

Bus from Malaga Airport to Nerja

Unfortunately, the ALSA bus services to Nerja do not have any direct departures from the airport. As such you would need to make your way to one of the bus stations from which they do depart.

The easiest route would be to catch the C1 Renfe train that links the airport with the city centre. You would take the train directly from the airport and head towards the Malaga María Zambrano station which is right next door to the bus station. This trip by train should take about 8 mins.

Taxi from Malaga Airport to Nerja:

The distance from Malaga to Nerja is approximately 70 kilometres and journey time should be in and around 45 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes depending on traffic.

Given the distance, it’s probably understandable that a one-way taxi ride rate may not work out to be the cheapest option. According to the Taxi Union site the expected fare to take a taxi from Malaga to Nerja should be between €92 – €110.

It’s a good idea to compare the taxi services versus other cab hailing options such as Uber. Although in many cases Uber doesn’t actually work out cheaper. So be sure to compare in order to get the best fare.

Tip: Read all the tips & advice on catching a taxi on the Malaga Airport transport page for more details as well as important hints and suggestions.

Private Transfer from Malaga Airport to Nerja

An alternative to getting a Malaga to Nerja taxi would be to pre-book a private transfer service instead. It’s a great option for those wanting to know that their driver will be waiting for them at the airport’s arrivals, ready to transfer them to their destination.

If you are interested in booking a Malaga to Nerja transfer then have a look at Welcome Pickups, through whom you can pre-book directly and online.

Currently, when looking up this particular route, they are quoting a rate of €76 one-way. This does of course also depend on your dates and times.

Driving from Malaga to Nerja by Car

Journey Duration: Between 45 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes

The last option would be to consider renting a car for the duration of your stay in Andalucia. This will not only give more freedom to travel at your own pace but also allow you to explore more of the region’s off the beaten track gems, that you would likely miss if only relying on public transport. As already mentioned, with the distance between the two cities being roughly 70 kilometres, meaning that the drive from Malaga to Nerja by car should take between 45 minutes to around 1 hour 10 minutes.

If you are still looking to book your car rental for your trip, then have a look at, which I am happy to recommend based on past experience. The site is fairly easy to use and they compare a range of different providers meaning you don’t have to shop around on tons of different sites to get a good deal. Visit here to view rates & availability.

Spanish Motorways Great news – the highway connecting Nerja & Malaga is the A7 which happens to be a free motorway. Normally tolled roads in Spain start with AP and a number – example AP-46, whereas free motorways that aren’t tolled usually starts only with an A and a number, such as the A7 connecting these two particular cities.

This is good to note especially if you are embarking on a road trip and plan to explore the region or ever farther afield in other parts of Spain. When planning out your journey and driving routes in Spain, then consult the following Spanish road map that I find quite useful!
