How to get to Tenerife

As a part of the Canary Islands, a group of 7 islands set off the coast of Morrocco and forming part of an autonomous region of Spain, the easiest way to travel to Tenerife is by air.

The island is home to two main airports, Tenerife South and Tenerife North. Most visitors pass through Tenerife South as this airport is also closer to the main touristy areas on the island.

Best Beaches in Tenerife South

Tenerife is considered one of the warmest places in Spain during winter. This is particularly true in Tenerife South as the region receives beautiful weather year-round, making it a popular destination among tourists.

Home to some of the most breathtaking white-sand beaches in Tenerife, as well as some of the island’s best resorts, the southern region is a must for anyone visiting. Here is a list of some of the best Tenerife South beaches.

Playa De La Tejita Beach in Tenerife

1. Playa De La Tejita Beach in Tenerife

Found on one of Tenerife’s southernmost parts is the island’s largest natural beach – Playa De La Tejita. With a half-mile stretch of beautifully golden sand leading up to the infamous Montaña Roja, Playa De La Tejita offers a remarkably scenic escape from civilization making it one of the best Tenerife beaches to visit.

The beach is fairly secluded, making it a popular spot among nature lovers and naturists alike. It is also just a half-an-hour walk from the laid-back kitesurfer’s resort of El Médano, making it a favourite spot amongst water sport enthusiasts.

On one side of the beach, you will find a small kiosk shop, some sun loungers and umbrellas. For the most part, however, the beach is not very commercial and remains undiscovered by most tourists.

Note: The beach is very open and there’s little place to escape the wind and hot sun, so be sure to bring an umbrella or beach tent, as well as some snacks. Be sure to check out my packing list for Spain, covering all the essentials you may need for your next Spanish getaway.

Playa Del Duque – Costa Adeje Beach

2. Playa Del Duque - Costa Adeje Beach

Also found in the upmarket region of Costa Adeje is the beautiful Playa Fañabé Beach. With its limpid ocean and golden Tenerife sands, this beach is a popular destination for all beachgoers.

On Playa Fañabé, you’ll find plenty to do, from the large selection of watersports to the many trendy restaurants, bars and cafés. Take a jet-ski or paddleboard through the clear, open waters or try to keep yourself atop a banana boat. If you’re not feeling as adventurous, enjoy a cool beverage and some live music while basking in the sun. Regardless, Playa Fañabé offers something fun for everyone.

Playa Del Camisón – Palm Beach Tenerife

4. Playa Del Camisón - Palm Beach Tenerife

Playa Del Camisón, found between Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos, is a charming beach dotted with palm trees and is the perfect Tenerife beach for families.

Being a man-made beach, Playa Del Camisón is guarded by windbreakers on either side, keeping the waters calm and safe for everyone. There are also lifeguards present on-site.

There are plenty of excellent facilities along its shores, these include showers, sun loungers, umbrellas and parking close by. There is also a wonderful beachfront restaurant and bar where you can enjoy some local Spanish cuisine.

Playa Del Camisón is also the perfect spot for sundowners or a lovely sunset picnic on the beach’s soft, golden sand or on the green grass nearby.

For those interested in water sports, try your hand in stand-up paddle boarding or rent a pedal boat and cruise along the bay’s calm, open waters.

Best North Tenerife Beaches

If you’re looking for the best beach in Tenerife, then the northern region of the island cannot be overlooked. Home to the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife, great hiking trails, authentic villages and beautiful black-sand beaches, Tenerife’s north has plenty to offer.

While the southern region of Tenerife is the most popular part of the island among tourists, the north includes a number of hidden gems worth exploring. Here are some of the best beaches in the north of Tenerife.

Playa El Bollullo

5. Playa El Bollullo

Playa El Bollullo, largely characterized by its large expanse of black volcanic sand, is arguably the most beautiful Tenerife beach.

Nestled away in the scenic La Orotava Valley, Playa El Bollullo remains untouched and offers a great deal of exclusivity. The secluded beach is reachable via a 15-minute drive by car from the centre of Puerto de la Cruz. For the more active-minded, take a scenic walk down a narrow pathway lined with banana plantations towards the entrance of the beach.

Playa El Bollullo is the perfect beach for anyone looking to escape reality. While there are no shops or accommodation found on the beachfront, there is a beautiful bar and restaurant on the cliffs overlooking the beach.

Playa Jardín

6. Playa Jardín

Playa Jardin is a series of Tenerife black-sand beaches located in the northern city of Puerto de la Cruz and is one of the region’s most beautiful beaches. The beach’s most outstanding feature is the magnificent tropical garden found on the beachfront’s perimeter.

The tropical garden, designed by the famed Canarian artist and architect César Manrique, incorporates a vibrant profusion of plants and flowers, palm trees and man-made waterfalls. With its attractive coastal landscape, Playa Jardin is the perfect beach for anyone who’s dreamt of relaxing in a beautiful tropical paradise.

Playa Jardin is divided into three sections, namely Castillo beach, Punta Brava beach and Charcón beach. Each of the beaches is connected by the promenade, where you’ll find a number of lovely restaurants and cafeterias, as well as a few children’s playgrounds. There is also a stage where there are often live music acts performing.

Regarding facilities, Playa Jardin has sunbeds and parasols available for hire, as well as showers, changing rooms and wheelchair access points. The beach also has a lateral breakwater to protect swimmers from high waves; however, there are still open areas that are great for surfing too.

Playa de La Teresitas – Best Tenerife Beaches

7. Playa de La Teresitas - Best Tenerife Beaches

Playa de La Teresitas is a beautiful honey-gold beach located in the small town of San Andres, a 10-minute drive from the island’s capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. With two kilometres of sand imported from the Sahara, this man-made palm-lined beach boasts the brightest and finest shoreline in Tenerife.

With its calm waters, Playa de La Teresitas is better known as a spot perfect for relaxation and does not feature much in terms of adrenaline-pumping activities. However, the spectacular Anaga Mountains, serving as a backdrop to the beach, is home to some of the island’s best hiking trails. The beach itself is perfect for families with children as the water is safe for swimming.

On the beach, you’ll find a number of amenities, including showers, sunbeds, umbrellas and access points for those with limited mobility. As San Andres was once a fishing village, you will find an assortment of lovely restaurants serving some of the best seafood in Tenerife.
