Sharing is caring!

Is It Worth Chasing the Winter Sun in Spain?

Looking for the warmest place in Spain in winter?

Winter in Europe doesn’t often showcase many hot and sunny days, but rather there’s plenty of cold days of rain and sometimes even snow. Though that can have its charm, it’s also nice to be able to feel the warmth of sun rays on your skin.

So, why not escape to a warmer part of Europe, like Spain, for a mid-winter break to explore some Spanish hidden gems. The country has many great qualities like amazing food and a relaxed atmosphere. Giving you the chance to leave behind your winter coat and break out your swimming costumes.

I definitely think it’s worth it, to jump on a plane or rent a car, and make that trip to Spain.  Treat yourself to a nice sunny city-break or beach holiday.

Spain Winter Weather

Warmest Place in Spain in Winter - Barcelona Winter
Barcelona Winter

The Spanish climate is regarded as one of the mildest among the European nations. And winter in the country is a prime example of this.

If you’re looking for that winter sun, I would advise you to visit the coast. The average daytime temperatures in winter are about 15°C. In Catalonia and Costa Brava regions, you can find plenty of sun during this time of the year.

Another warm place to visit is the Canary Islands. The climate is pleasant and the temperature averages just over 20°C, making for a sunny winter escape.

Weather in Southern Spain in December and January

This time of the year is different from many other European countries. There isn’t a lot of rain and people aren’t sitting inside trying to stay warm by the fireplace.

Southern Spain is the best region to visit if you are looking for a warmer and more comfortable climate. But the best part about spending December in Spain is that you get to spend Christmas on the beach – how is that for a bucket list item?

Warmest Place in Spain in February

In some regions of the country, February can experience cold and unstable weather conditions. The weather can change a few times during the day, going from sunny to rainy and back again.

In the northern and central areas of Spain, February is the wettest month. In comparison to the southern parts of the country, it feels more like spring, where temperatures are mild and average around 18°C.

If neither of these options appeals to you, I would suggest going to the Canary Islands or Malaga, as they get much warmer during this time of the year. Also, if you visit during February, cities like Seville aren’t as crowded. If you’re looking for inspiration, I’ve compiled a list of the best things to do in Seville.

Hot Places in Spain to Visit During Winter

Malaga Winter
Malaga Winter

Spain has various options for those looking to catch some sunshine during the winter months. Visit the Canary Islands and experience a relaxing, warm holiday right in the middle of winter. Or explore one of the country’s several cities and enjoy the clement weather in Spain.

Malaga

The city is famous for its bright walls and buildings, which help you get into that summer feeling even though it’s winter. The temperatures are mild when the sun is out, and with your sun hat on, the weather feels nothing short of pleasant.

Though it might still be too chilly to take a dip in the water, the weather is perfect for a nice beach stroll or picnic.

The city has several beautiful buildings to admire like the Moorish Alcazaba or the unfinished Malaga Cathedral. And as the birthplace of one of the country’s most famous artists, it’s definitely worth giving the Picasso museum a visit.

Canary Islands

With average temperatures of 22°C and over 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, it’s no wonder that these islands are a favourite with those trying to escape the cold European winters.

Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro make up the Canary Islands and combined have a total of 1,5000 kilometres of coastline. With over 500 beaches to choose from and a variety of landscapes, it’s easy to find the right combination of sun, leisure and relaxation.

Tenerife

Tenerife is located close to the equator, which makes it one of the hottest parts of Spain in December and a great sun-seeking destination during winter.

The island has varied terrain, providing loads of interesting things to see and do. Hike up the volcanic, lunar landscape of Mount Teide National Park or head to Aqualand waterpark. For those wanting to relax, discover one of its many beaches, or play a round of golf.

The old fishing ports are filled with traditional charm and are a great place to stop and try one of the delicious local seafood dishes.

Fuerteventura

Though it’s one of the lesser-known Canary Islands, it has some of the best beaches on offer, with white beaches and turquoise water.

With over 150 beaches on the island to choose from, you are bound to find one to your liking. Surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing are popular activities on the island, and for those wanting to be a little adventurous, I suggest giving it a go.

Take a boat trip to the nearby island of Lanzarote and spot geothermal activity on the volcanic rocks. Or you can watch lava come through the craters.

Almeria

The Tabernas, found in Almeria, is the only desert in Europe. During winter, most days reach a temperature of 20°C, making it one of the hottest places in Spain during winter.

Not only does Almeria have a desert, but it’s also home to stunning white beaches, which are relatively quiet during this time of year.

A great way to explore the area and visit the small town attractions is by renting a bike. However, if you do end up renting a car, take a drive from your Almeria accommodation to Cabo de Gata National Park.

Warmest Place in Spain in Winter – Seville Winter

Seville

As the capital of the Andalusia region of Spain, this charming city is crammed full with churches, monuments, history and Moorish buildings.

You will find Europe’s largest Gothic cathedral here, with stunning views of the city. If you’re looking for a unique experience, visit the oldest bull ring, Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza. . Take a tour of the bullring and learn about the history of the tradition.

The city really comes alive during the evening. Take part in the buzzing nightlight of flamenco dancing, or sample some local delicacies at a tapas bar.

With temperatures averaging 12°C during winter and about 5-6 hours of sunshine a day, Seville is a perfect sunny winter holiday destination. Some days, the weather is even warmer, with temperatures reaching almost 20°C –  it’s the perfect climate to enjoy a day out in the sun.

Marbella

Located on Costa del Sol, it’s no surprise that its sandy beaches are one of its most popular attractions. Though some of the smaller Chiringuitos (little beach bars) might close during winter, the bigger ones will definitely be open.

Feel the sun tingle on your skin while sipping on a cocktail and indulging on local snacks as you watch the waves crash onto the beach.

The Old Town area of Marbella is beautiful, with its cobbled streets paved between the shops, bars and restaurants – it makes for a perfect relaxing afternoon to stroll through the town.

It may shock some that Marbella has such a rich shopping and restaurant culture, but the reason behind it is that it’s considered a favourite spot to visit among the rich and famous. Even the pickiest of palates will find a restaurant here, just make sure it doesn’t empty out your wallet.
