It goes without saying that Santorini in Greece is undoubtedly one of the most romantic Greek Islands you’ll have the pleasure of visiting. I have to admit that when I planned my first visit to Santorini, I was somewhat apprehensive to go, thinking it would be an over-hyped tourist hotspot. Did I find plenty of tourists, sure! Is Santorini as expensive and over-hyped as so many make it out to be? Not exactly, in fact, Santorini and was absolutely 100% worth the visit!

I loved Santorini and the four nights spent on the island was simply not enough! The views are incredible, the architecture and whitewashed buildings out of this world, the sunsets exquisite, and the food, oh, the glorious food was delicious! 

Having lived up to its reputation, today I encourage anyone and everyone who asks, to visit this beautiful island in the Cyclades. If you’re headed to Santorini or also planning to visit, then this post is for you.

Where to stay in Santorini: Best Areas

When deciding where to stay in Santorini, there are four main areas that I’d consider or recommend. Here are the best areas to stay on the island (in my opinion).

Oia, Santorini – Airbnbs in Santorini

First up on my list of places to stay in, is the picturesque village of Oia that’s located on the northern tip of Santorini. This charming village is certainly one of the prettiest on the island and is small enough to get by on foot quite easily.

Here you can wander through the idyllic streets, head to the Oia Castle for exceptional views (a firm favourite amongst tourists to view the sunset from), or head down what feels like an endless flight of stairs to Amoudi Bay. Here you can lounge by the crystal clear waters with a beautiful rust coloured hills behind you and dine on some of the freshest seafood on the island!

Oia is a great option for first-timers, it’s easy to explore and if you’re based on the southern part of the village you’ll have gorgeous views out over the Caldera. It is good to note that due to its popularity, Oia is usually abuzz during the day as the streets are filled with eager tourists, many from cruise ships and only visiting for the day, making the evenings much quieter.  

Imerovigli in Santorini – My Favourite!

Next up is Imerovigli, this is where I stayed on my visit and I must say, I fell in love with this part of Santorini. It overs direct views out over the Caldera and is filled with the quintessential Greek architecture you’ll expect to find in Santorini.

Imerovigli, Fira, and Firastofani are not far from each other. From Imerovigli, you can walk approximately 15-minutes to Firostefani and then another 15-minutes to Fira. Oia, on the other hand, is somewhat more removed from these 3 villages. In fact, a great day hike is to walk along the 10 kilometres (6 miles) from Fira to Oia which should take you roughly 2 – 3 hours, or slightly longer if you stop off to admire the breathtaking views! 

Overall, Imerovigli has gorgeous views, some would argue the best on the island due to its elevated height, beautiful architecture and a handful of great restaurants to choose from. Imerovigli is also a tad quieter, but, you’re also only a short walk away from both Firostefani and Fira. 

Firostefani

Firostefani is situated in between both Imerovigli and Fira. Also somewhat quieter and still offering panoramic views out over the caldera, this is another great choice of area to stay at in Santorini.

Here you’ll find a couple of good restaurants but no nightlife or bars, for that you’ll have to head over to vibrant Fira to indulge in a spot of Greek nightlife!

Fira 

Being the largest town on the island of Santorini, Fira is also the busiest by way of restaurants and nightlife, in fact, it’s the heart of Santorini’s nightlife scene and where you’ll likely end up for a spot of island partying.

Fira still remains incredibly picturesque and is home to the most restaurants and bars you’ll find on the island. Also boasting views out over the caldera, the town is especially pretty at night when all the lights of the restaurants, hotels, and bars dotted all along the cliff, light up Fira, simply gorgeous!

By no means the cheapest on my list, but, this property is for those looking for a luxury romantic stay!

The host’s communication was excellent before and throughout our stay and he assisted us by booking transfers and making sure we had everything we needed. The location was lovely. The view can not be beat. We enjoyed that the hot tub was very private and in general the villa was quiet and private without being remote or hard to reach. There are several restaurants within a close walk as well as a small market and bakery. We truly enjoyed our stay!”
